The Chase - Rape Board

Black water swelled, rising from unseen depths, displaced by frantic footfalls. The gray fabric, white long ago, gave way, letting the cold liquid in. She didn’t notice. She didn’t care.

She didn’t know where she was.

She knew only her heartbeat, thunder that beat against the wall of her chest like an ominous drum, heralding the inevitable. She knew only her breath, which tore at her throat with claws as it climbed with desperation to freedom she too sought with maddening frustration to attain. She knew only the memory of the touch, frozen by the rain, so layered with dirt that it was like sandpaper on her delicate skin. She knew in an instant that it was a malevolent touch, the eager touch of an unwelcome strange, the rough touch of under-sophisticated lust, and she felt the surge of adrenaline. Her leg coiled and pumped, and reduced in an instant to a startled, thinking animal, she bolted. Her shirt ripped as he grasped to stop her, and she felt the hot air of his want on her neck as he lunged.

Once already he had caught her, and with an over-eager grab, stumbled as he stripped her of her open raincoat. Only then did it start to rain, as if to mock her.

Would he kill her?

She didn’t know. She didn’t want to know. Not in this world of beasts.

Bricks flew past her eyes in red blurs, the gravity illegible to her in the fog of panic. Her vision swam red as pain swam slowly up her side, burning her in its wake. Wood flew past her eyes, interspaced by horizontal bars of ominous black shadow. The water had carried the sharp pebbles and broken glass through the holes of her aged shoes, and she felt it cut her feet as she ran. The water was cold, and the icy breath of autumn did little to dry her skin. Her breath caught in her throat as her lungs struggled to pull air in.

She cut her hand on the wall as she gripped it to turn.

Her toe snagged a poorly patched piece of roadwork as she searched frantically for a way out of the maze of alleys she found herself in.

She realized she had dropped all of her books. The exam was in three days.

She almost laughed as she fought the blossoming ache in her thighs and accelerated out of her stumble.

She felt water from his heavy footfalls hit her calf, and imagined she could feel his grasping fingers inches from her back.

Her scream erupted as a strangled gasp as she tried to leap across some imaginary threshold with the last of her strength, hoping somehow that those last, micro-fractions of time she gained by throwing herself desperately forward would somehow save her.

She hit nothing but the alley floor, sending up great clouds of water paper with all the force her tiny twenty-year-old frame could generate.

She kicked at him once, striking him with a feeble, glancing blow to the shin, and then he was upon her. Her clothes ripped, cutting into her skin as he anchored them against her to tear them loose. Wire that would not break bit deep as it was yanked by hands of impossible strength.

Karen bit her lip, determined not to cry out.

She did anyways.
