I heard about the spam attack the other day. SD informed me that the spammer tried to make it look like I had started it. I find that rather hillarious.

Even more hillarious is the guy added me to msn.

The fact that he thinks I know about an attack is a clear Red Flag 3. I am positive that he is one of those responsible for the attack that he described. Time to bring my hacker cousin into the conversation.

What became of the spammer? Well let's just say my cousin could have made the spammer's computer destory itself in a matter of seconds if he felt like it, muahaha!

I by no means DO NOT want things happening to me and this is more of a question rather than a "negative comment". I know there are a lot of hackers out there (good and bad, skill-wise), some do for the good, many do for the bad. If you say your cousin could make his [that spammer's] computer "destroy itself" in a matter of seconds if he wanted to, I'd say he's REALLY skilled. But that kind of skill level gets you noticed doesn't it? So what is stopping him from doing what he has potential for? A lot of script kiddies use certain trojan programs which I won't mention that can do what you're saying, and that, for the most part, is useless if there's a good firewall and antivirus program running.

There are a lot of people that exaggerate their skill level; not saying your cousin is but how do you know if he's any good or not? Again, it's a question. I'm not exactly doubting your cousin's skill level since I've written so many of these "I'm only asking a question", clearly I'm scared of what could happen.

You don't have anything to worry about, trust me. He's not going to do anything to some random person just because he feels like it. I haven't seen him at his best, but I know some who have.

As for what's stopping him doing what he has potential for I do not know. I like to think of it as the less I know the better off I am.

There is no way in the world that a hacker could "destroy" someone's computer. That's just a silly statement. At the worst, all you will loose is data.

True. I used "destroy" because I couldn't think of anything better to go with it.

I wanted to hint on that. People exaggerate stuff; computers can't be destroyed unless physically done. It certainly can't be done software wise. The closest to destruction would be the erasing of data like Clean said, or maybe program corruption, both could be fixed with backups.

Ummm, there's been TWO different classes of attacks over the years that could 'destroy hardware'. The earliest was a virus that changed the refresh rate for your monitor. Ancient IBM monitors couldn't handle it, and would self-destruct. Once you let the 'magic smoke' out of the parts, it's hard to put it back in...

The other is the 'BIOS ROM' virus and it's ilk. If your BIOS ROM gets creamed, there's very little you can do about it, and you toss the motherboard. I actually fixed one like that once, but I have the tools and background. Most motherboards come with built-in protection against that sort of attack nowadays.

If a worm just deletes files, good recovery software can recover them. I haven't seen any of the script kiddies cruel enough to overwrite the data, yet. In any event, if your boot drive is flatlined, it's near enough to total hardware failure for most folks. I've seen it done more than twice.
