No, I'm not starting a new "Ego v. Phantom" debate.

What I'm referring to is the fascinating turn of events in American politics.

On Thursday, the debate between the Democratic candidates was respectful and civil, with a sick-making lovefest at the end. It produced only a couple of decent soundbites, which have been played ad nauseum ever since, but gave us no new insights into the positions of the candidates. Since Thursday, the woman who as recently as two months ago as assumed to be the favorite (Hillary Clinton) finds herself behind in all the polls to the insurgent Barack Obama, and she came out swinging.

First was anger over some sort of flier on NAFTA (an agreement regarding trade with other countries, which Bill Clinton signed) which misquoted one word - ONE word. The flier said Hillary called it a "boon". It turns out she did not, in fact, specifically call it a boon. She did, however, use other words of support for NAFTA. She went APESHIT - shaking her finger like a scolding mother, she shrilled, "Shame on you!!!". A masterful victory of form over substance.

Then came sarcasm. In a speech later the same day, in a voice dripping with scorn, she melodramatically and with sweeping gestures talked about her opponent's message of optimism. "And the heavens will open....celestial choirs will play...."

Finally came the underground network, with pictures of Sen. Obama wearing a Kenyan costume circulating over the internet which purportedly came from the Clinton campaign. A shock jock reminding everyone that Sen. Obama's middle name is "Hussein".

Though all this, Sen. Obama has impressed me. He calmly smiles and says it's only to be expected. Arrogant? Maybe. But a little arrogance in a leader isn't necessarily a bad thing. I didn't know anything about Barack Obama before the campaign - in fact I supported another candidate - but the difference between these two is striking.

Am I wrong for wondering if Sen. Clinton would react like a startled hen in the White House like she has during this campaign?

. I just have to shake my head at some of the political antics, not that it's much different up here mind you. Having said that, all that I've read and seen thusfar indicate that, compared to Clinton, Obama occupies the ethical high ground, and he's certainly more endearing than she is.
