I went to a political fundraiser in 1970 because Audie Murphy was going to be a speaker. After his speech, I managed to say hello and get my copy of "To Hell and Back " signed by him. I remember being surprised that he seemed shy and embarrassed. I explained that I considered him to a true American hero. He replied pointing to the book, "that wasn't so brave, you ought to try writing a few songs." He went on say that the men that he served with, were the real heroes. He was a most impressive man from Texas. He died in a private plane crash in Virginia on the Memorial Day Weekend of 1971. I remember that I was training a young Lab and heard the news on the barn radio. I had to stop and go to the house. I sat for the rest of the day, listening to his music and reading the book.
Indeed, Gunther Rall was awarded the Knight's cross and just about every other medal of his time. I remember that he had piercing eyes and an extraordinary Texas A & M style handshake. His posture was perfect and his voice was strong and clear. I clearly remember that he was questioned about the air war at length. All of the standard questions were asked. In separate questions, he was asked the following questions: Did the Luftwaffe run out of fuel, airplanes, pilots or munitions? To each separate question he replied in excellent English. No the Luftwaffe had more fuel that they could burn, more airplanes and munitions than they needed, better technology and adequate pilots. There was pride evident in each response. Then he was asked why they had failed. His response was so matter of fact, that it made us all feel dumb. He said, "General Patton captured our airfields and we had no place to land." Yeager and Kennedy
Quote:
On Nov. 21, 1963, a group of my high school friends and I were given an excuse to leave school in order to see the president on the following day. The parade route was published in the local newspaper; so we got there early in order to get a good view. The crowd was anything but hostile to the president. A bit reserved, but most cordial. I made eye contact with the governor, but not with either the president or first lady. As they passed, one of my friends commented that he couldn't believe how much space was between the cars of the motorcade. After they passed, we heard a tremendous disturbance, but didn't know what was going on. When we got back to school, a World War II and Korean war vet (a grizzled and very tough regular army Sgt. that was assistant to the Colonel in our ROTC unit) tearfully informed us that the president had been shot. The only celebs I've met will make the members here go 'who the fuck are they'... or maybe just one of them.
I met Slaven Bilic at the shopping mall near my building. Said good evening and asked him if he thought our national team could pull off a 4-2-2-2 lineup. He said he'll think about it and we said farewell. I guess he decided against it When I was a junior in highschool, I got an autograph from Severina. The third is a guy no one here has definitely heard of, and I don't really like him much anyway.
