Moderated threads in Pics / Videos?

I think this will eliminate spam, and phishing posts in the pics and video section. This would mean if you create a thread in the pics/video forum a moderator would have to approve it first before it's shown.

Anyone think this is a good idea?

While it sounds like a good idea there are a couple of additional thoughts to consider. Once started can a thread be replied to without issue or does a reply require moderator approval? If replies are wide open then the spammers will simply add their garbage to existing threads as replies. Conversely if replies require approval then the mods will rapidly lose their minds with all the posts they are having to approve each day in the movie threads!

Didn't mean to be the proverbial "fly in the ointment" here woody as I would love to see a way to permanently remove the phishers and spammers. Unfortunately right now our best weapon will likely continue to be the veterans who point out such nonsense when they see it so that the unwary new folks don't fall prey to these leeches before the mods can remove it. One would think that unless they are a fully automated posting apparatus that eventually a human will get the idea and move to greener pastures for their skulduggery.

That's a good point, but since the main pictures and video forum is the most viewed section at least we can keep that spam free.

No, posts in threads would still be un-moderated. Spam in existing threads would still be possible. However, I noticed some of these spammers are using spam software. There are programs out there that automatically create threads and posts on multiple forums with one click. That wouldn't be possible to do in threads that already exist.

I think it would certainly reduce the amount of spam, vanilla porn and phishing attempts; but I agree it would not totally eliminate it.

I'm not sure if it can be done here, but I'm a moderator on a Yahoo group. What we did there is set things up so the first post of any new member was moderated. That post would have to be reviewed by a mod and then we would change their settings so subsequent posts would go through with no intervention by the mods.

I'm not sure if that could be set up here or not, but we found that it almost completely eliminated spam over there.

That would work, and it would certainly eliminate spam in all sections; however, that would be way too much work for mods if they had to manually change settings for each new user. I'm not sure how many members register everyday, but looking at the Alexa traffic rankings this site generates A LOT of traffic.

I think moderated threads in one section would be easier on mods, although not as effective as your idea. Everyone will still have a chance to contribute, but no one will have the chance to exploit us with phishing, spam or virus links. Instead of mods having to remove and delete posts, they would just be deciding ahead of time what will be shown!
