Ok I know you are an emergency room dr and everything, but I have a question.

Is having a high grain diet and eating alot of wheat really good for you or no? Because I'm seeing alot of food that advertises "wheat-free" and am just wondering if a high intake of grains have an adverse effect...for example if it provides too much folic acid and that cant be good for you and I heard that it also supplies a vitamin that when taken in excess can cause some types of cancers.

hmmm ... not sure about this one Honey.

There are several theories out there regarding the Western Diet - and I think gradually we are realising that a diet high in carbs isn't actually natural (more of a result of massive farming and marketing). The "wheat free" things were targeted at people with gluten intolerance (eg. celiac disease) but in general, consumption of wheat isn't view as "bad" by mainstream medicine.

Folic acid is not present in significant amount in grains unless they are fortified with it (mainly in green leafy vegetables), as for vitamin that can cause cancer - hehehe, not sure if you noticed, every bloody week there's a new thing that causes cancer.

In general, I advice my patient and my family moderation of everything - not too much, not too little, and your body will be able to handle it.

(psss ... that may go for sex as well ...

)

Haha! I'm gonna have to take your word for this. I've eaten some pretty gross stuff (scorpion lollypop, anyone?) but this is bad.

where the hell did you get scorpion lollypop? mexico?!

i once ate live bouncing shrimp soaked in vodka in some weird russian restaurant - a bit little catching your own sashimi. thinking back, that was kinda gross.

Haha! No, close though. It was an artist's colony in Arizona my brother and some friends dared me to eat it and I succumbed to peer pressure.

It wasn't awful, the scorpion itself tasted like dirt covered in bad cheese.

And that sounds like something I've eaten at Koreatown.

...I need to stop eating stuff like that.

On a side note, someone got ahold of some Vegemite so that's also gonna be part of the column. I'm scared.

I did a bad thing to my ribs. Today I fell off of my backyard deck onto a flower pot. Landed on my back. It took me several minutes to get up as it was a bit painful. Now if I bend over it's good luck.... Kinda hard to straighten up. Cracked rib? Bruised?
Wondering.

Genophan (paramedic) brings them in, overindulged with blood and needles (and that's just her),
Gaggirl our sexy nurse triages them and checks them in after a "preliminary" examination to her pleasure (might want to borrow Parisa's strapon with the temperature probe),
after she's done with them, Colle's Fracture and I go over the patient in more detail, leaving no anatomy unturned, palpated or poked,
and of course our medical student, Spell Siren, we can kick around

(Pete can help!)
then we send them to FR for "discharge planning", which I am sure can be rough and prolonged, just don't leave any stains

Of course, our Pain specialist and Paramedic Genophan will make sure you return home safely, with the right prescription and injections

(hmmm .... some sorta weird-ass roleplay in there somewhere ...

)
