This is one we cant be blamed for. When we were getting spammed from an IP that was a repeat customer we would ban the entire range of IPs.
Example 1.1.1.1.1 1.1.1.1.2 We would ban 1.*.*.* The * would ban ALL IPs that started with 1. Well the board admin (owner) didnt want IPs banned like that. So we now have IPs that were shut out now active again. We have to ban the individual 4 digit IP. We cant wildcard them out anymore. Sorry gang.................  Quote:

On the other hand, in the vast Internet, the odds that such a user would ever try to join a board such as this one with a fairly narrow appeal are very low. The two most effective means of blocking the spam are email confirmation of new registrations, and putting all new users in a "moderated" group for the first post or two. Email confirmation would stop the majority of spambots in their tracks. And for those that did get through, the moderation would catch the rest because these bots are all automated and don't know how to post anything but the spam they've been scripted with. Therefore their first post would be seen as spam and the mods would see that and kill them before anyone else ever knew they were there. It's really no more work than what's being done now. But, it's my understanding that both of these approaches have been rejected before, so I don't expect anything will change. In any case, thank you CR, and baur, for everything you guys do to keep this place running smoothly! I hate to imagine what it'd be like if you two weren't around!
