"Give a man a fish, you'll help him for one day. Teach a man how to find a fish and you will have helped him for his whole life."

What's better for poor people? Be able to buy a medication because it is cheap or be able to buy it with the help of the social security doles?

Should the benefits of a young company be used only for the company or split between the company and the social?

How do you look at this you rape fantasizers ?

I have an old friend who lives in a large comfortable house in the leafy suburbs. He used to belong to the communist party, he even had MI5 on his tail after a visit to East Germany. He taught accountancy and still takes a close interest in economic affairs.
Anyway he is convinced that Capitalism has only had a pyretic victory in dominating the world's economy. This is how his thinking goes; the ultmate goal of capitalism is profit and so costs have to be minimised. How do companies reduce their costs? Well lower wages are usually the easiest way to bigger profits. Now we have a global economy companies are more and more looking to locate their workforce where wages are lowest. The UK already has many of its call centres now in India, manufacturing has almost ceased here. When there is mass unemployment in the West, who is going to buy all those consumer goods? Not the poor workers getting pittance wages in China and the Sub-Continent and if companies can't sell their products what will happen then?
An interesting argument.

I live in the US home of capitalism. I believe what has went wrong is that greed has completely overtaken moral responsibility. Not to long ago workers had loyality to a company and vice versa. That is no longer the case on either side. Greed as replaced any concern for the good of our fellow human. It is all about the bottom dollar.

The companies are not to blame; it is the human stockholders that want every possible dollar return. They stockholders let the companies treat their workers like shit; reward CEOs with obscene salaries and bonuses.

America is a country of hypercritcs. We all bitch about Congress, but I bet almost all of them will get voted back in come November. We look for what is best for us; no longer the common good.

I don't believe socialism is the best. The best is a mixture of striving for one's self while having a moral center.

Sadly Throat, greed is nothing new, having a 'moral centre' has never stopped those god fearing hogonaires exploiting their workforce, and others, while blithely going to church every Sunday to thank god.

Here in France we just got through 14 years of socialism. Today a French young company starting from scratch can be tax free for one year, but in the second year, it has to give 53% of its benefits to the government. The result of that is employers don't have a lot of choice : they have to get greedy to survive, and they can't take any single risk in the way they manage their company. No more employing someone just because he needs more experience on his CV, today only the senior get the job.

How does prices go down ? When a company feels comfortable money wise, it is possible to decide to bring the prices down. Sure, that company will make some loss for a while, but when the masses get to know about the lower prices (if the publicity campaign is well done), then that company make a real nice benefit. This is the basic concurrence system. When good benefits are done, when employers start to relax a little, they can get back on thinking about laying a hand to unexperienced youngsters.

Giving money to the people in distress is humanly very good but in some ways it is also like gambling in casino or spending money in a food-store. When you go to a food store, you get goods in return, when you gamble you might just lose your shirt. How can we make sure the people in distress are not going to take advantage of the money they got from the government to make a 'happy wanking living' ?

I can't make up my mind about that question. Despite the crazy French taxes, I still see some young companies, even here in my town getting big. I also saw a friend shutting down his computer company because of the taxes.......perhaps the best politic ever is the one that can be adapted to every one in particular. But the only way for the government to do that is to have a very close look at everyone life, and that would bring us back to fascism.....I don't know....

Its called big brother Snale, every goverment, including most of those in the West, under the guise of anti-terrorism, what to find out and pry into everything that their citizens are doing. Even 'the land of the free' are dancing into a 'big brother' existence, then even our thoughts might be considered 'unsound'.
god help us then.

Good luck to you, and you country shy, as far as the US is, growing increasingly Imperialistic.

....and 9/11 did not help it much.
