i understand what he did - but not why that makes him so great - all he did was kill a few people !! but then again so did a guy who lives near me, and no-one is wearing his t-shirts !!

It became a fad amongst the young and counter-culture people of the 70s to wear Che shirts as a sign of rebellion...now people do it because it's retro cool!

Che also supervised the executions of dozens of Cubans after Fidel came to power, some for crimes as menial as serving in Batista's army or owning a business.

I happen to think Fidel "exported" Che because his popularity rivaled Fidel's own. And Fidel was smart enough to realise a dead martyr is far better than a live rival.

I believe what makes him greater than other revolutionaries was his statement: "Someone's declaration of sympathy for the suffering people is useless; he has to join their fate. Either fight with them to set them free, or die next to them".
Not only he said that, he fulfilled it also.
Also, he applicated (and later described on books) guerilla warfare tactics that are still teached in military academies.

No, Fidel offered him a ministerial rank, he offered him the Cuban ministry of defence. Che denied and moved to other revolting countries to continue fighting.

Speaking about executions, G.G. Marques gives a very good example of what happens after the revolutionaries come in power in his book "100 years of loneliness".

p.s I noticed lately that more and more people trust wiki for their education. Yeah it's the same thing here. A friend of mine had a Che poster on her door.
When I asked why, she just said he was a symbol of compassion, and did a lot for others, like spending time with the leprosy and stuff like that ....I never really understood....Maybe girls are responsible for his succes because he was cute...
