Blood, in quantities, is not especially appealing, and your own blood can actually make you feel very ill (body wonders why a huge mass of "you" is dead)

Well, it goes to an intersesting part of sexuality....that a lot of our normal inhibitions, often including pain, are significantly reduced when we're truly in "the heat of the moment" a slap to the face can be great when dealt during coitus, yet before or after would be a horrible, painful insult.
