Just an observation - I don't know if it’s always about violence per se. For real rapist, this is probably the case.

I’m fairly sure for fantasy rapist, its not always violence. Sometimes its violence, other times its longer voyeurism before the act (stalking), other times its more control (from opportunistic, to planned, to bondage, to drug induced), etc. Still other times it’s simply the evolution of the victim (next door neighbor to super-model to royalty to super heros to aliens LOL).

I’ve talk to people who just can’t stomach the violence in rape. So they fantasize about coercion, mild date rape, etc.

I think Ace has it right for rape fantasy seekers. “Needing more stimulation to compensate as one gets used to a scenario” seems about right. The interesting thing is the track it takes us on. Seems to be different for each person. Looking at the path of the escalation is the fun part over time.

Incidentally -

I’m usually the third person in my fantasies. So I envision the act as though it were a film. When I first began (very early in life), it started as simple molestation. You know, just thinking about someone pulling down a girl’s dress, or fondling her against her will. By the time I found out what sex was, it had evolved into penetration. But it would end at penetration (that is the fantasy would end) for a long time.

There was a long stretch of time before I began to fantasize about the perpetrator coming during the act. And around the same time, the victim started coming also (probably some repressed guilt). Until you've actually had sex a lot, sex can seem very messy (think back).

I don’t know that real violence ever entered the picture. But the escalation can certainly be tracked.
