I guess anyone living where guns where hard to come by legally would be tempted!

Yes, well, as I keep having to point out, the only time that Ireland was "united" was when it was part of the United Kingdom.
For all I care, Ireland, in its entirety, could float away and crash in to Boston. I just find the idea that Sinn Fein, and the Provisional IRA, and all the other so called Irish Nationalists are some how a force for good, really naïve, and damaging.

The old saying "Ireland divided will never be at peace" keeps popping into my mind.

Actually, guns aren't that hard to come by here, either legally, or illegally. It is simply a matter of knowing how to go about acquiring guns. I could buy a gun today. Unfortunately, a consequence of government control is that it may not necessarily be the gun I want. That's communism for you!

Well, looks like Ireland has its first confirmed Islamic State jihadi.
Hassan Bal has pleaded guilty to two charges of funding IZAL. He sent money to a man in Bosnia, knowing the money would be given to the group. Bal was born in London, but has lived in Ireland for ten years, and holds British and Irish passports.

Lovely. I wonder what the likes of Pearse would make of the current political situation in EIRE, with the republic effectively a state within a federation?

I thought Sinn Fein MPs didn't take their salary?
It's small wonder the Irish have a reputation for not being very clever. Irish freedom, the first civil rights movement that won taxation without representation!

They don't take a salary from the British government, they do draw one from the party.
Sinn Fein does get expense money to maintain a London office. If London does leave the UK, this may change. Last edited by tom8517; 01-15-2018 at 05:29 PM. |

I think it's only right that he went, or was persuaded to.

Sinn Fein suspended him from the party, they have absolutely no say in whether he stays or goes as an MP though. MPs are elected, not selected. The can defect to another party, or decide half way through a parliamentary term to become independent.
MPs that do this usually end up getting binned at the next general election any way. There is also a process by which the electorate can sack their MP, but I can't recall off hand exactly how this works. I think there is a sort of impeachment process. Of course, if Sinn Fein really wanted to ensure he went, I'm sure there was some one handy to have a "quiet word".

after doing some reading, a reminder of something I'd forgotten. the worst murder of civilians occurred not in the north, or in England, but in the republic. Simultaneous bombings, no warning phone calls, in Dublin and Monaghan by the loyalists. The devices were crude by IRA standards, had the loyalists had the technical competence do build a device of the Manchester size the death toll would have been far higher.

Didn’t the Luftwaffe bomb Dublin, by “mistake”?

Less remembered than bloody Sunday in Derry, but nearly as deadly was the "Ballymurphy massacre" 11 civilians were shot dead over three days in west Belfast during the opening phases of the internment operation. Again the Parachute regiment was responsible.
Six civilians were killed on 9 August, these were: Francis Quinn (19), shot by a sniper (who had taken position at the nearby army base) while going to the aid of a wounded man.[9][10] Fr. Hugh Mullan (38), a Catholic priest, shot by a sniper while going to the aid of a wounded man.[9][11] Joan Connolly (50), shot as she stood opposite the army base.[9][12] Daniel Teggart (44), was shot fourteen times. Most of the bullets entered his back, allegedly as he lay injured on the ground.[9][13] Noel Phillips (20), shot as he stood opposite the army base.[9][14] Joseph Murphy (41), shot as he stood opposite the army base.[9] Murphy was subsequently taken into army custody and after his release, as he was dying in hospital, he claimed that he had been beaten and shot again while in custody. When his body was exhumed in October 2015, a second bullet was discovered in his body, which activists say corroborate his claim.[15 In my mind, this was worse than bloody Sunday, where the soldiers may have believed they were in danger. But here a highly trained army sniper, secure inside a British army base, in absolutely no danger, picks off random civilians. Perhaps he thought the priest had an armalite tucked under his cassock? In the usual scheme of things, what you describe would probably be a crime. Not necessarily a war crime, or crime against humanity. The British government didn't quite go full out to remove Irish Catholics from the North, still definitely criminal activity.
Bloody Sunday is as you say, quite some thing else. By then, any soldier serving in Ulster had very good reason to fear for his life. As us Brits put it, the squaddies knew Irish Catholic youths were up for a ruck with the army, and the IRA definitely antagonised the situation if reports of snipers are to be believed. I lived for some time in Yeovil in Somerset, which is near to RNAS Yeovilton. It wasn't particularly unusual back in the day to see military policemen going round cracking the skulls of any one fighting outside pubs and clubs, going through their pockets to search for warrant cards. Matlocks were dragged back to base, if it was a civilian, an ambulance was called and they were left to bleed! Military doesn't have quite the same level of accountability as the police, so it was an ideal way to keep order.

Actually Maggie Thatcher did float the idea of ending the troubles by the mass deportation of the nationalist population south of the border. Calmer heads prevailed and her advisors talked her out of it. This was shortly after the Brighton bombing, I suppose one's judgement might be affected by narrowly missing being blown up. Margaret Thatcher horrified her advisers when she recommended that the government should revive the memory of Oliver Cromwell - dubbed the butcher of Ireland - and encourage tens of thousands of Catholics to leave Ulster for the south. A year after she was nearly killed in the IRA's 1984 Brighton bomb, the then prime minister expressed dismay at Catholic opposition to British rule when they could follow the example of ancestors who were evicted from Ulster at the barrel of a Cromwellian gun in the 17th century. |
