Different time, different football. I guess it is hard to tell. According to a FIFA's survey, Maradona is the greatest. Nevertheless, Pele won more titles and scored more than a 1000 goals. In my humble opinion, I would say that both are the greatest. I had the unforgettable experience to see Maradona live in both Olympic Stadium and Azteca Stadium in 1986 World Cup (Argentina vs Korea and Argentina vs England) -I was living in Mexico in those times- and he is out of this world really. Unfortunately, I never saw Pele (I'm not that old). So, when talking about those two, I'd rather say that the first step in the podium must be shared.
Cheers,

But Pelé was a master, no doubt about it. There are a lot of clips of him in Youtube if you are interested in seeing his art. |

its hard to say...sure, maradona was a great player, but i mean come on, hand of god? he even admitted he cheated, so wtf. i understand argentinian pride and the whole falklands thing going on, but seriously. although of course, the great weave goal is a landmark of modern football. but pele has scored the most goals ever, and has never marred his record with things like suspensions, substance abuses and bullshit goals like "hand of god".....
so, even though im part of the Iglesia Maradoniana, i vote for Pele

Surely it isn't easy to say who is the better of them,I voted for Maradona as I see his skills were more helpful for the team than Pele,I see the things that Pele is better than Maradona are the shots by leg and head and the the inside the penalty area, but Maradona is better in the passing, swerving the ball, dribble, speed, ball control, body balance and acceleration.
Also I think the defences were weaker in the past,I think they were stronger in the 80' and 90' than in the 60' and 70'. The player who I see doesn't less than Maradona and Pele in many skills is Rummenigge but he was unlucky by his injures,I say this from only his goals I saw, also there are some great players who I see their all playing and I think they also are near from Pele and Maradona like Henry,Zidane,Ronaldo,C.Ronaldo and Kahn. |

Another difference between the two is that the Argentinian team, without Maradona, would not have won the world cup while the Brazilians are tired of winning world cups with or without Pelé.
I mean, Maradona could carry a team to victory. The team Pelé played in had victory written all over them already. Sure he made a difference but the Brazilian team Pelé played with probably would have won anyways even if Pelé had not been part of them.. When was the last time Argentina was even close to winning the world cup without Maradona? There you go... With Maradona gone, the Argentines have a hard time sealing it. |

Nobody knows the answer, it is only a matter of opinion but I voted for Maradona. Pele of course was an amazing player but what swayed me is the goal referred to in the post above, where he ran from the half way line, beat several players and scored. That is my favourite thing in football, the ability to beat defenders with ease and skill the way players like George Best did and the Argentinian Messi does today.
Cristiano Ronaldo is often credited with this asset, but he relies on his pace and rarely leaves a wing back dead by skill alone. He does the stepovers and all that nonsense, but only to turn and pass back. Theo Walcott's assist against Liverpool in the Champions League Quarter Final was out of this world and Messi ironically scored a Maradona-esque goal a year or two ago. These kind of goals and players make football the best sport in the world for me.

This man is Roberto Baggio but when he was young, his skills are very good but sorry to say there is a gap between him and Maradona or Pele, from my mind he is the best in Italian football.
and I hope this photo is better. |

Baggio was very clever and he played mnay good matches with the national team of Italy,I think he was the basic player who moved Italy to the final in 1994 although his penalty kick which gave the cup to Brazil.
But what about this player? although he doesn't have high skills but I see him one of the best attackers in the history of football. |
