Default Bastard out of Carolina

I watch this movie a few weeks ago, Thought it was some chick flick and was totally shocked to find a horrific rape scene at the end of it. What was concerning was it was a minor.

Im just wondering in this day in age how the hell that got to mainstream???

I know there has been so much talk about HOUNDDOG - the dakota fanning movie, but the above movie actually made me feel quite sick.

Surley the censors have some responsiblity in all of this.

Is it that Rape sells movies????

I mean I was just going thru my Little collection NOT of mainstream movies and its remarkable how many scenes of rape there are in movies???
But they should never be showing Minors in that position!!!

Does anyone else have an opinion on the above.

Well, as some of you may have noticed I am not exactly an understanding person when it comes to real rape ( ) or an overexessive display of it.
When it comes to telling tales however - and in the end a movie is just one way of doing so - to me it depends a lot on WHAT the story wants to say. What the intention is.
Sometimes ("The Accused" for example) when you want to make a certain point it is necessary to make things like a rape appear on the screen, to make the viewers see!

I have seen quite a lot of movies in which the included rape scenes (as well as most regular sex scenes) were rather unnecessary but let's face it - you guys are just sick! So it's only natural many movies include scenes to attract even more male attention.
As many studies have shown (including mine) most men encounter fantasies about forceful sex (not necessarily definitive rape fantasies) in their lives and sexual desires. So of course rape scenes can add to the audience. Take a look around here: Some fellow members post rape scenes from mainstream movies and many members really like them, even prefer them to actual rape fantasy movies.

I do not support any kinds of underage porn but let's not fool ourselves and be serious. Children DO get abused and raped as well. In many countries even much more often than adults. I haven't see "Hounddog" so I can't give any specific comments on that movie but generally I think as long as telling the stories requires a scene like a rape (or the scene underlines the story) I do not mind. And it IS happening so I think (in the right way, with the right intention) it is not just okay to show it, but it is needed!

I saw that movie, a long, long time ago.

It was in fact quite controversial at the time and at one point, it was banned in Canada, but that was overturned on appeal.

In my opinion, the rape scene wasn't gratuitous at all, it was a necessary part of the story. I suppose one can debate how graphic a particular scene should be, but the girl getting raped, was part of the story.

The primary character is a young girl who's physically and then sexually abused by her step-father, while her mother turns a blind eye. At one point and I assume this is the scene pedro is talking about, the girl's mother walks in on her husband raping her daughter. The mother breaks a bottle over his head and yet, she continues to stay with him.

I read a complaint of "The Accused" before, that by putting the rape scene at the end, the writer/director was using it for male attention and it was sick to have it in that order. In a way it is the hook, whether you like rape depicted in film or you hate it, everyone was actually wanting to see exactly what happened by the end. For someone with rape fantasies I think it is the best order of events because you have an entire film of build up and a payoff. People without them, might want it out of the way early so they're not reluctantly looking forward to it.

When my son was in kindergarten I chummed up with one of the other single moms. One day I got a hysterical phone call. She had walked in and found her husband molesting her son. (He was not the boy's father.)

An entire family was destroyed that day. If a staged scene like the one you're referring to can get people talking about it and maybe make it easier for even one person to come forward and prosecute the subhuman slime who prey on children who trust them, I'm all for it.

Just give me 10 minutes in a room with a guy like that.....

Now I think I'll go kiss my husband, the stepfather of my children, who has loved them like they were his own.

A lot of that stuff with child actors (legal and legitimate films addressing child abuse and child rape) is staged in a way that it isn't nearly as traumatic for the kid as you'd guess from watching. Trick camera work does a lot.

And I thought it was well done in Bastard out of Carolina because it was so horrifying to watch; rape of a child should provoke horror, and a well-done scene on the subject would get exactly that reaction.
