Of course, people have to be responsible for their actions. You don't let off a burglar on account of him/her being a drug addict and the crime was committed to feed the habit. You punish him for burglary but allow him to get help with his addiction and take away the reason for his criminal behaviour. In the same way, you can punish the sex offender but at the same time allow him to get help for his psychological problem (usually sex/porn addiction or maybe anger issues or whatever). I use the term "psychological problem" in the broadest possible sense. Understanding and showing compassion to the perpetrator is not disrespectful of the victim. If anything, it shows that you comprehend the suffering by the victim (as much as humanely possible) and really want to make sure it does not happen again. And this might sound heartless, frankly, but there just isn't enough money to lock up every sex offender (or other criminals) for the rest of their lives. In terms of therapy, yes the state can do something but it is also something the individual can do themselves. For those who think humanity should only be saved for the victim: "Love your neighbour as you love yourself" "An eye for an eye and the whole world would be blind" And finally, at the end of the day, there is no one on the planet who not capable of committing a crime, let alone a sexual offence. There is a thin line between fantasy and reality. People who fantasise about RAPING OTHERS are 99% of the way there anywhere. So the my last word goes to pure self-interest: if you "hypothetically speaking" committed a crime, what would you want? Ok, kinda got carried away there... Agreed. Rehabilitation programs are equally expensive. Keeping track of sex offenders is also expensive. As far as I'm concerned, if there is any chance of reoffense, take away the criminal's ability to offend. And the "chemical castration" I suggested is much more humane that what is seen in certain justice systems. Know how they deal with petty theives in some Mid-East Countries? Sorry, pravjey. Only so much compassion to go around. Saving it for the victims.
