Briar ran. And just when she thought that her legs would give out, she ran some more. The forest was nothing more than a green blur as she sprinted through, the trees forming a crude labyrinth until she was so disoriented that she had absolutely no idea where she was headed. All Briar knew was that she was free, and she was determined to keep it that way.

Just when her body had reached its limit, the young woman caught sight of a single, ancient cottage. The thatched roof was caving in, and the bricks that formed the walls looked so worn that Briar was sure that one touch would send the entire structure crumbling into dust. Wild ivy climbed the fragile walls, and a thick layer of brush surrounded the place, only adding to its forebodingness. But amidst all the decay, an old woman was humming a pleasant tune to herself as she took down her sun-dried laundry from a line.

Briar watched her warily for a moment, before her legs gave a shudder as if to warn her that she didn't have much time. Slowly, she almost drunkenly staggered over to the woman, gasping for air.

The elderly woman looked alarmed for a moment before throwing own her laundry and rushing to Briar's side. "Are you all right, dearie?" Asked the old woman, her face wrinkling with concern. Briar couldn't answer, all the air her lungs managed to choke down was needed to keep her body functioning. Worried, the woman--surprisingly strong for her age--wrapped her arm around the younger woman, helping her into the cottage. "Come inside, come inside. Rest a bit." The woman soothed, shutting the door behind her.

The creatures followed her scent, the smell of sweat and fear driving them onwards. They had no other goal in mind then finding her and they would see it through regardless of their own safety or whoever got in their way. They did not stop and they did not tire as they ran over rocks and fallen trees, her scent growing stronger and stronger with each minute.

Finally they came upon the cottage, the largest of them taking up the front while the others fell in behind. This one had known their quarry intimately, having been the one to have raped her not less than an hour ago. His form was hard to grasp, being the purest black and seemingly changing from moment to moment. It was one of Crevis's most powerful creations.

They surrounded the house, staying past the treeline and trying to cut off the points of escape. Brair was only human but could be tricky. From inside a person would only see their shadows moving back and forth, growls and grunts echoing from the distance.

"Sit down, dearie," the old woman said, steering Briar toward a splintery chair which she nearly collapsed onto gratefully. From a distance, Briar thought she could hear an infernal growl coming from the forest, but she was quick to dismiss that as being a part of her imagination.

The old woman scurried around the kitchen for a moment, before pushing a cup of water and a slice of bread into Briar's hands. She took the refreshments happily, gulping down the ice-cold water and wolfing down the bread as if they were her last meal. "Thank you," she finally said in between eager bites of bread.

The woman smiled. "Of course. Now you just sit and rest now, I just need to go collect my laundry. I'll be right back." And with that, the old woman hobbled out the door, closing it behind her.

Briar leaned back in the chair, relieved that the woman hadn't asked her any questions and feeling blissfully happy. She had escaped, she was sure of it. Pregnant or not, she was free.

The old woman had not the faintest idea what was lurking in the woods though she felt a wave of unease come over her as she gathered her drying garments. She couldn't place were it came from other than the distraught young woman who had come from the woods. But she didn't seem to be any trouble.

It was then the woman placed it. The sounds of the forest, the birds were quite.

That was the last though that went through her mind as a pair of ragged claws fell into her neck, killing her quickly but not silently. There was only a seconds scream and the sound of feeding as the creature made short work of her.

Their black leader approached the door, slamming his full weight into it and almost tearing it off it hinges. His brothers circles the house, scratching at the walls and crawling over the roof as he beat on the door and growled at its sole occupant.

Finally he door could take no more. It hinges broke soundly and it collapsed under the creatures weight. His towering form stepped inside, glaring at his prey with hungry eyes. These creatures were not entirely without will, and he had no orders not to have the tender morsel in front of him.

Briar was on her feet almost immediately when she heard the short, albeit blood-curdling scream. A last kick of adrenaline coursing through her veins and fueling her exhausted body with a short spurt of strength.

Hurrying over to the cottage's single, cracked window she stared with horror at what remained of the old woman's body. Her shock was so great that she barely even registered the sound of the door being forced open until it was too late.

The next thing she knew, Crevis' great, black creature was glaring at her. But how? Briar's eyes darted around the room, looking for something to defend herself with. How had they found her?

The woman's eyes sparked when she saw the unlit fireplace in the corner; a rusted poker resting in the cold ashes. Lunging for the poker, Briar grabbing it with her trembling hands, swinging it in front of her like a sword.
