Dad's plea for crackdown on rape websites

THE father of an 18-year-old girl who was subjected to a frenzied knife attack has urged the government to investigate violent pornographic websites visited by the attempted rapist.

Gary Furness, father of victim Carley, has urged authorities to act after it emerged that there were British links to websites which glorify rape.

He said: "I would ask the government to look at little bit closer. It is not right that people can access these sorts of websites so easily."

Last Tuesday Miss Furness waived her right to anonymity to talk about her ordeal at the hands of sicko Peter Anscombe, who was found guilty of assault with intention to commit a sexual offence at the Old Bailey on the same day.

Prior to his attack on Miss Furness, Anscombe, of Millfield Cottages, Sevenoaks Way, Orpington, had accessed websites which glorified rape.

In one scene which he downloaded to his computer, a man stalks a woman through a park before throwing her in the bushes and attacking her.

The court heard how Anscombe mirrored the scene when he followed shop assistant Miss Furness, who was 17 at the time, and tried to rape her while stabbing her in the throat and chest.

Prosecuting, Christopher Hehir said that Anscombe "decided to turn grotesque fantasy into reality".

The websites are hosted by overseas company Pantel Deluxe, which also runs websites devoted to incest.

A spokeswoman for the Child and Woman Abuse Studies Unit said that there was a direct link between the material which Anscombe was using and the crime he committed.

She said: "Using pornography will not only make men more likely to commit acts of sexual violence, but also make them more likely to trivialise acts of sexual violence."

Payments for the web host, Pantel Deluxe, are administered through Standard Pay, a Spanish-based company which has been registered in the UK.

A spokesman for Standard Pay denied any links between Britain and their company adding that 'none of our values are English as well'.

He said: "We are suspending our clients account and are available for UK prosecution assistance if we must, but we have not been contacted as of now."

He said that the UK arm of the company had been dissolved in 2006 but a spokesman for Companies House confirmed that the company was dissolved but company details were logged to the address of a formations company in London.

He added: "An attempt to open a processing company in UK was unsuccessful, in fact we do not know a single UK card processor or bank to accept any adult website for that matter, so in fact even the corporate bank account has never been opened and the company has never been operating at all."

Pantel Deluxe proudly bears on its website a logo saying it accepts payments through Visa cards.

A spokesman for Visa said: "If we are made aware of any such allegations we will investigate and if the allegations are substantiated we will stop the merchant's ability to accept Visa and pass details to law enforcement authorities."

A spokesman for Internet Watch Foundation, who work with the government to regulate violent pornography, said: "We take reports just on the content side, the actual image. If that image isn't in the UK we wouldn't be able to do anything about it."

MP for Maidstone Anne Widdecombe, who has previously spoken on the issue, said: "You can't hold them to account if they are somewhere in cyberspace, but you can hold them to account if there is a clear British connection.

"A lot depends on whether they can be found in the UK but it is a starting point."

I don't know how it is in america or around the world but certain aspects of sexual offenses in the UK are over hyped in the media. This is a good example of the press claiming that websites, television, magazines etc are all driving people to do things they wouldn't normally do. NONSENSE! Rapists existed before the media did, so did peadophiles and murderers for that matter. Violent computer games don't make kids commit violent acts anymore than the rape website made this guy attack that girl.

The media refects society. It always has and always will do. just because the refection is poor on us doesn't mean its anyone elses fault but ours. Most of the people on this website understand that this is rape FANTASY and I don't think anyone here does it for real. There are real rapists out there and they don't need websites like ours to tell them to do it. The internet, TV or films didn't exist when Jack the Ripper was around.
