Rep is pretty much what others think of you and your posts. If you post something that other people like then they will give you rep. However, if you post something that people don't like or is just plain ignorant, then you can have rep taken away. It can also be based on what you have to contribute to the site or discussion. For instance, in the movies section if you post a rape video that is hard to get, or that no one has seen yet, you would probably get rep for it.
