Easy Rider
Hey, I've just watched Easy Rider yesterday, and I'm frankly quite disappointed.
Maybe there's something I missed, or did not understand...to me it's just a movie about two bikers looking to be free...in the last scene Bill (Denis Hoper) tells his buddy Wyatt (Peter Fonda) 'that's it man, we're free and rich ! ' and Wyatt answers "No man we blew it". I believe Wyatt says that because he thinks when you get rich by selling drugs as they did, you're never really free... Anyone understands it another way ? |

I know one thing, the soundtrack rocks !!!
I've never seen the whole movie, but will check it out, I think back in those days so much drugs were used that alot of stuff may not have made sense then or now. |

I took the meaning of "we blew it" as they thought they were on this big spiritual journey and that they were doing something profound but in the end, Capt. America realized that all they did was have a bad lsd trip and get a friend killed. So while they did have enough money to retire, it just seemed pointless and without meaning in the end. Just my take.

Here's an excerpt from a review I found online:
"Billy and Wyatt go on to a New Orleans whorehouse that Hanson had recommended. There, they celebrate Mardi Gras and go on an LSD trip in a cemetery with two young prostitutes. Then they are on the open road again, and Billy laughs triumphantly. "We've done it. We're rich, Wyatt. We did it, man." To which Wyatt answers cryptically, "We blew it." Critics have debated this meaning. To me, Wyatt seems to be commenting on the futility of their nomadic life -- a life that catches up much of the confused, aimless lives of the dissidents of their generation. But Hopper said he really had in mind the fact that they have lost their innocence because their wealth is corrupt. It has come from a dope sale. "When Peter says, 'We blew it', he's talking about easy money, that we should have used our energies to make it." |

Ha that's great !
thanks a lot bjc1979 Yes you are right when you say their quest had something spiritual, I remember that scene when they are hanging with a hippie brotherhood and there's people playing theatre, and they say 'we're like actors as well, we're playing a role and we don't really know who we are' because they hope to find themselves in their trip for freedom. Would you happen to remember more quotes about them looking for their true nature in the movie ? |
