Poor England
I know only a few of you watch football ("soccer") here, but this is a big deal in the UK this week.
England lost 3-2 to Croatia on Wednesday night in front of nearly 90,000 fans at Wembley and won't be going to Euro 2008. It's the first time since the 1994 World Cup that the lads who invented football have failed to qualify for a major tournament. Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and my own Ireland will also be twiddling their thumbs next summer. For those of you who don't know, the European Championship is held every 4 years between 16 nations, the English reached the last 8 last time. Couple of interesting things to point out here, the manager Steve McClaren dropped his number 1 goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who has had a number of blunders in recent times for both club and country. He gambles on Scott Carson, his first ever competitive cap, I saw a news piece on his childhood earlier in the day and a man saying it's a great day for his hometown - and he lets the ball bounce through his hands inside 8 minutes. Have to feel for the guy. 2-1 down in the second half, substitute David Beckham (you Americans know him! That's 99 caps now, he played well in a few of them too) delivers a beautiful cross to the 7 foot guy, who is England's saviour for all of 12 minutes, when the Croats get the winner. Croatia had already qualified and had nothing to play for, England only needed a draw to finish second and go through. The media are going to go mental over this, believe me. McClaren, who said he won't resign, is scheduled to fly out for the World Cup 2010 qualifying draw, but I doubt even the flight attendants would let him get on. Russia, who had qualification in their hands until the shock 2-1 defeat to Israel last Saturday, somehow finished above England with the expected 1-0 in Andorra. The players huddled and threw manager Guus Hiddink into the air, the man who took Australia to the World Cup for the first time in 32 years, and South Korea to the semi finals in 2002, and the man who England approached after he verbally agreed to manage Russia, and kept his word. Instead they got McClaren, assistant manager under Sven Goran Eriksson from 2000-2006 and coach of a midtable English Premiership side. Eriksson, who guided the country to two consecutive World Cup quarter final appearances, was deemed a failure and the majority of the fans were happy to see him resign. He has now taken over a rubbish Manchester City side, assembled a squad in 2 weeks and taken them to the top 4 in the league. So England, I say to you, keep making those brilliant decisions

It seems Steve McClaren is "small" to replace Ericson. At least Sven could draw a rabbit out of the hat and pass to the finals without any good performance.
It also seems that the "two speeds" soccer Europe does not exists anymore; Romania and Croatia passed in the finals as the first team of their groups, while traditionally strong teams merely managed to, and some of them stayed out. |

That's true, the 9 groups were only topped by 2 big nations, Italy and Spain, and Germany were the only one that had qualification wrapped up early.
Steve McClaren was sacked today after an emergency meeting, Jose Mourinho and the best English manager in the last number of years, Sam Allardyce, don't want the job. They'll probably go for a foreign manager this time, as will Ireland, McClaren's assistant manager Terry Venables is the favourite to take our job. Thanks again, idiots!

That rerminds me of a quote that the boss of an american team said about FRANZ BECKENBAUER, the best defensive player ever:
"Why he stays behind? I didnt paid for that! GO! Dribble them all and score!! " *sighs* americans.... |

You mean you don't think Beckham's Soccerball is hot right now SD? But Tom Cruise thinks it's rad!
Actually I think Bobby Moore was the best ever defender, one rare moment he brought the ball forward and found himself in the opponent's half, scoring a great goal from distance. Even as his teammates were jumping all around him, he jogged back without even a smile, because it wasn't his job to score goals. Try explaining that to an American

I believe the roots of these bad performances are deeper. English teams bought a lot of foreign players the last years and let the academy programms fall behind.
The last top-class player came out from an English team was Wayne Rooney and that was years ago. |

we can never have a top flight national team until our own clubs play home grown talent rather than foreign players...how will players like Theo Walcott ever come on as players when they are in the reserves all the time?
We need to decide...do we want a great League......or a great National team....I don't think you can have both |

Walcott is the only British player in the Arsenal first team and reserves, that should never happen. Mourinho signed mostly foreign players at Chelsea but still kept half the England team in his starting 11 and won two Premiership titles. Besides at Liverpool, you don't see many Spanish players abroad and their league is generally considered the strongest in Europe. On the other hand, Italians practically never leave their country and their clubs' attendances pale in comparison to England's, and that includes the league below the Premiership.
As for McClaren, when England had pulled Croatia back to 2-2 and were dominating the game, he and his coaches were shouting at the players to get back and into position. He started with one up front, this is a guy who plays with fear and no belief in his team.

Thats another point about the English team. They dont have a leader, a footballer who could "carry" the team on his shoulders in difficult periods.

And almost inevitably, England and Croatia have been drawn together again in the same World Cup 2010 qualifying group. Both of them can say hello to Borat while in Kazakhstan too.
Greece got the easiest group, bastards

Yep, i think if we were asked to choose opponents that group would be the choice!
But i am not sure that the greek team can have good performances in the long run. |
