This sums up brilliantly your naïve, romanticised notion of a free and united Ireland. If by "the Irish" you mean the Republic, Ulster never belonged to the Republic and can't be given back. In case you hadn't noticed, Good Friday has given the citizens democracy, and Sinn Fein can't even handle that properly!
Good Friday also does allow for the unification of Ireland, this has already been covered in this thread.
I suppose you believe that if Ulster had just been given over to the Republic, then it would have gone quietly?
