Civil rights campaigners have been giving varying perspectives on the 50th anniversaryof what many pin point as the start of the Troubles.

Londonderry 1968, an illegal civil rights march was violently broken up by the RUC. Marchers from both Catholic and Protestant areas of the city describe how the protest was attacked, and how rioting broke out in response. Although the protest was organised over the perceived discrimination against Catholics by the unionist dominated city council, at the time many working class protestsnts were denied the vote because they did not own property.

One protester who went on to become an Ulster Unionist Party councillor in the city described the aftermath of the attack. According to him, attacks on the Fountain, an council estate in a Protestant area of the city, began, and after that, in Londonderry at least, the civil rights movement was no longer a united one. It was the beginnings of sectarianism in the city.
