That is exactly my point. Having a free port in Belfast, coupled with a customs arrangement and continued free movement between the UK and Ireland, (which existed before both nations joined the common market), would mean Ireland could circumvent EU trade laws and benefit from the United Kingdoms global trade deals.
Easy to see why the EU have invented "regulatory alignment" or keeping the UK, and especially Northern Ireland, bound to EU trade rules, for as long as possible.
Of course, Sinn Fein will scream bloody murder if Belfast gets free port status. It could put the kibosh on "reunification" forever, because lets face it, people know when they're best off!
