While I condemn extra legal violence of the type described above, its important to remember the environment that fostered it. The rebirth of the IRA in 1969 was the direct result of the inability, or more likely the disinclination of the British government to protect British subjects, unwilling ones, from mob violence that was at best ignored and often participated in by the local police force.
