Is Brexit muddying the waters? Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP seem to think that leaving the European Union is a reason to have another independence referendum. They seem to have confused wishing to remain in the European Union with wanting to leave the United Kingdom. Polling suggests that support for remaining in the UK has actually grown since the EU referendum.

So that's that idea shot down in flames. I haven't seen any such reports concerning Northern Ireland, but don't see how it would be any different. It is an impoverished area of the UK, and receives a lot of money from the EU, so that may have driven the referendum result there. However, Unionists that are the majority, and that voted to remain in the EU aren't suddenly going to become tricolour waving Taigs over night!

The EU has made its position clear. If Ireland unites, it will remain in the EU, just as Germany did. It would be, after all, essentially the same country. Just more territory. However, under the terms of The Good Friday Agreement, for Ireland to unite would require a majority in favour in both the Republic and in Northern Ireland, in two separate referendums. I have not heard of a consensus for that on either side of the border.

More likely, Eire will leave the European Union, and possibly seek some sort of loose political, defence and economic agreement with the United Kingdom. After all, putting aside sectarian differences which were only really exploited by a few, we are all essentially British, with very much in common.
