Oddly enough, I'll have to agree with FR on this one. The walls were put up to keep the civilians of both communities apart. They didn't hamper movement of the security forces, or the IRA for that matter. Today the walls are covered with some fairly elaborate murals, of both the Republican and loyalist flavor.
