The British government has given its support for a proposal to put together a bid to hold the 2030 football world cup in Great Britain and Ireland. The bid would first require the approval of the five Home Nations football associations.

I am not aware whether the government of the Republic of Ireland has voiced an opinion on the proposal.

The Home Nations originally referred to sporting competitions between England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. In Rugby Union, the Home Nations Cup evolved in to the annual Six Nations Cup tournament, which now includes France (spits), and Italy, with all of Ireland fielding one team.

Indeed. A previous tournament was jointly hosted by Japan and South Korea, and France and Belgium jointly hosted a European Championship tournament.

It would be interesting to see all five Home Nations in a tournament together though, that is unprecedented.
