I don't really know enough to form a complete opinion about Sri Lanka, so all will say is that if the majority of a people in a region desire independance, then they should be allowed it.

As for the other, what you got to remember is that while there was some terrible acts commited by the British, there a nations that commited far worse. While most of the acts commited were to put done rebellions, while some, the Belgiums in the Congo, had a distinct policy of cruelty.

Also, while the British goverment did all they could to encourage business to invest in these nations, hence the growth of textile mills in india.

Can I recommend a book to you? Its Niall Ferguson's Empire: How Britain Made The Modern World, a book wrote by a scot, who you can imagine has no reason to love the English.
